Every time you open your browser, you have a mission to accomplish: trips to plan, emails to send, stories to read, skills to learn. We built Chrome to help you do all of those things as quickly and safely as possible.

In the case of Chrome, those changes happen every six weeks to bring you new features and security updates, but our 10th birthday update is bigger than normal. First up, Chrome has a new look. These updates have a simpler look and will hopefully boost your productivity.

Take tabs, for instance. Are you a secret tab-hoarder? No judgment. We changed the shape of our tabs so that the website icons are easier to see, which makes it easier to navigate across lots of tabs.

On mobile, we've made a number of changes to help you browse faster, including moving the toolbar to the bottom on iOS, so it's easy to reach.

And across Chrome, we simplified the prompts, menus, and even the URLs in your address bar.

You get a lot done online these days—booking travel and appointments, shopping and working through your to-do lists across multiple sites at once. And we want to make sure that you can do all of those things easily and safely.

Now, Chrome can more accurately fill in your passwords, addresses, and credit card numbers, so that you can breeze through online checkout forms. All this information is saved to your Google account, and can also now be accessed directly from the Chrome toolbar. Staying secure on the web means using strong and unique passwords for every different site.

You know the box at the top of Chrome that combines the search bar and address bar into one? We call it the Omnibox, and we built it so that you can get to your search results as fast as possible. It will now show you answers directly in the address bar without having to open a new tab—from rich results on public figures or sporting events, to instant answers like the local weather via weather.

Due to adjusted work schedules at this time, we are pausing upcoming Chrome and Chrome OS releases. Our primary objectives are to ensure Chrome continues to be stable, secure, and work reliably for anyone who depends on them. Chromium Blog. With the stable release of Chrome 80 in FebruaryChrome began enforcing secure-by-default handling of third-party cookies as part of our ongoing effort to improve privacy and security across the web.

However in light of the extraordinary global circumstances due to COVID, we are temporarily rolling back the enforcement of SameSite cookie labeling, starting today. While most of the web ecosystem was prepared for this change, we want to ensure stability for websites providing essential services including banking, online groceries, government services and healthcare that facilitate our daily life during this time. As we roll back enforcement, organizations, users and sites should see no disruption.

We recognize the efforts of sites and individual developers who prepared for this change and appreciate the feedback from the web ecosystem, which has helped inform this decision.

Updates to form controls and focus Monday, March 30, HTML form controls provide the backbone for much of the web's interactivity. They're easy for developers to use, have built-in accessibility, and are familiar to our users. One issue with native form controls, however, is the inconsistency in their styling. Form controls that were added to the platform more recently were designed to match whatever style was popular at the time.

For Chromium based browsers, this has led to controls that look mismatched and sometimes outdated, which causes developers to spend extra time and ship extra code styling around the controls' default appearance. To help fix this problem, the teams at Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome spent the last year collaborating to retheme and improve the functionality of the built-in form controls on Chromium browsers.

The two teams also worked to make the focused states of form controls and other interactive elements like links easier to perceive.

These changes are available today in Edge on Windows, and may be seen in Chrome 81 as part of experiments. See the updated release schedule for Chrome 81 and Updates for Chrome on Android should roll out later this year.

The two teams wanted to make the controls feel like they were part of a matched set. This meant doing away with gradients and using more of a flat design inspired by current design systems.

As Nicole Sullivana member of the Chrome team, describes it:. We were going for beautiful, webby, and neutral. We hope that every design system would see a bit of themselves in the new designs and easily imagine how they might be adapted for their own branding.

Below is a comparison of the form controls as they previously appeared in Chromium and as they appear after the redesign:.

These changes are most notable in a few key areas:. The focus indicator—sometimes referred to as the "focus ring"—is an important accessibility feature that helps people using a keyboard or switch device to identify which element they're interacting with.

Previously, Chromium used a light single color outline to indicate the focused element. However, if the focused element happened to be on a similarly colored background, the ring would be difficult to perceive:.Your browser's Javascript functionality is turned off. But over the last few years, Flash has become less common. Three years ago, 80 percent of desktop Chrome users visited a site with Flash each day. Today usage is only 17 percent and continues to decline. This trend reveals that sites are migrating to open web technologies, which are faster and more power-efficient than Flash.

They also work on both mobile and desktop, so you can visit your favorite site anywhere. These open web technologies became the default experience for Chrome late last year when sites started needing to ask your permission to run Flash.

Chrome will continue phasing out Flash over the next few years, first by asking for your permission to run Flash in more situations, and eventually disabling it by default.

We will remove Flash completely from Chrome toward the end of If you regularly visit a site that uses Flash today, you may be wondering how this affects you. If the site continues to use Flash, and you give the site permission to run Flash, it will work through the end of Android is launching new features for Advanced Protection Program users to automatically protect them from malware. Improving privacy and security on the web Tuesday, May 7, Inwe launched Chrome with the goal of building a speedy, simple, secure and stable web for everyone, everywhere. Ten years later, user experience is still at the core of everything we do.

And they can also be used to track your browsing activity across the web to serve personalized content and ads. Unfortunately, to browsers, all of these different types of cookies look the same, which makes it difficult to tell how each cookie is being used — limiting the usefulness of cookie controls. Because of this, blunt solutions that block all cookies can significantly degrade the simple web experience that you know today, while heuristic-based approaches—where the browser guesses at a cookie's purpose—make the web unpredictable for developers.

We will preview these new features later this year. We are making a number of upcoming changes to Chrome to enable these features, starting with modifying how cookies work so that developers need to explicitly specify which cookies are allowed to work across websites — and could be used to track users. The mechanism we use builds on the web's SameSite cookie attribute, and you can find the technical details on web.

In the coming months, Chrome will require developers to use this mechanism to access their cookies across sites. This change will enable users to clear all such cookies while leaving single domain cookies unaffected, preserving user logins and settings. It will also enable browsers to provide clear information about which sites are setting these cookies, so users can make informed choices about how their data is used. This change also has a significant security benefit for users, protecting cookies from cross-site injection and data disclosure attacks like Spectre and CSRF by default.

We also announced our plan to eventually limit cross-site cookies to HTTPS connections, providing additional important privacy protections for our users. Developers can start to test their sites and see how these changes will affect behavior in the latest developer build of Chrome.

Protections against fingerprinting Making changes to how the browser treats cookies requires us to consider the broader web ecosystem. Blunt approaches to cookie blocking have been tried, and in response we have seen some user-tracking efforts move underground, employing harder-to-detect methods that subvert cookie controls. This is why Chrome plans to more aggressively restrict fingerprinting across the web.

Continuing to build a better web We believe these changes will help improve user privacy and security on the web — but we know that it will take time. We also recognize that both cross-site cookies and fingerprinting have uses other than tracking. We launched Chrome ten years ago with the objective of building a better web and improving the user experience. While our browser has evolved sinceour objective remains the same. Labels: chrome.
